Job Description

A K-12 school in Alexandria, VA is seeking an experienced Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) to provide essential support to students with visual impairments. This contract position spans the current school year (CSY) and offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the educational journey of visually impaired children.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess and develop individualized orientation and mobility plans for students with visual impairments
• Teach safe and effective travel techniques both indoors and outdoors
• Collaborate with special education teams, families, and classroom teachers to tailor support services
• Utilize assistive technology and adaptive tools to enhance student independence
• Monitor and document student progress and adjust strategies as needed
• Provide training and guidance to staff and caregivers on mobility techniques and safety considerations

Desired Qualifications:

• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS preferred)
• Experience working with K-12 students who have visual impairments
• Strong knowledge of mobility aids and adaptive equipment
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary educational team
• Familiarity with assistive technology tools for visually impaired students
